CitiBank, Email Samples, Security Privacy

Citibank:

Citibank is one of the largest banks in the world with services for consumers, small businesses and corporations. Citibank offers banking services, credit cards, investments and insurance, mortgage and student loans. They big competitors are banks like Wells Fargo and Chase Bank. Citibank has 1400 branches and 3800 ATMs in 46 countries and recently they added 5500 Citibank ATMs in 7-Eleven stores. If you sort through your credit cards in your wallet odds are one is from Citi. As a customer, it's always nice to have all your banking needs solved by 1 bank. You can get a checking account, savings account, certificates of deposit (CDs), IRAs, home loans, and credit cards. There is even an e-savings account from Citibank that has a 4.75% APY (as Feb 2007) with no monthly fee, no minimum balance and it's FDIC insured. Should you bank with Citibank? Like most banking institutions, Citibank probably has some competitive offers you should consider and others that you have no interest in.

Citibank Online Banking:

The biggest change in banks over the last decade or so is that now you can do so much more "online banking" with traditional banks. Citibank is no different from Wells Fargo or Countrywide in that they allow you to manage your finances online with online bill pay, transfers, online bank statements, online check images, email alerts, and the SafeWeb Online Fraud Protection service. For those of you who don't bank online, seriously consider it. You save time and money by being able to pay bills online, balance your checkbook online, and transfer money back and forth between your accounts without having to visit an actual bank. Many of the online checking accounts are free with direct deposit usage or by paying 2 bills online each month. Online banking is safe, fast, and convenient and Citibank is striving to make it personal as well. If you are hesistant to do your banking online, you can always call their 800 # or visit your local branch to take care of your banking needs.

Mortgages - Home Loans:

If you are in the market to buy a new home or just refinance, check out Citimortgage.com where you will find information on buying a home, refinancing a home, compare loan rates, and use their mortgage calculator to determine "how much house you can afford". They have an excellent First Time Homebuyers section that teaches potential homeowners about buying tips, mortgage options, rent vs buy scenarios, etc. If you are one of the lucky individuals who has made lots of paper money with your homes equity over the last few years, Citibank offers an educational rundown on how to use the equity to pay off credit card debt, make home improvements or just take out extra cash. They also go into the benefits of refinancing with calculators showing you how much you could save each month or how you could pay off your loan faster. You can apply online and when you do get your mortgage setup through Citibank, you can monitor your account online.

Visa/Mastercard Services:

Citicards.com is the customized site designed by Citibank that displays all their credit cards. Citibank cards are specialized for college students, small business owners, and professionals to maximize your needs. Each credit card can be tailored to your reward choices like travel, cash back, or savings. The technology is there to protect you from stolen cards or fraudulent use with Identity Monitor from Citi, The Lost Wallet Service, and Fraud Early Warning. These tools allow you to do online shopping without worry and know that Citi is tracking your cards usage to prevent fraud and keep your personal information private. Citibank works with Home Depot, Sears, Macys, Bloomingdales, Hilton, American Express and American Airlines to give you the perfect credit card. There rates (APR's) are very competitive and you can often get initial rates lowered after a year of use on a credit card with a good payment history.

Student Loans:

Citi was smart and they bought the domain name Studentloan.com so that it would be easy for students or parents looking for students loans to find their website. The site is designed to help parents and students figure out what to expect in terms of college expenses and costs and how to finance their education. There are sections for Planning for College, Paying for College, Applying for a Loan, Repaying Student Loans, and Managing Your Account. We found the student loan site to be very "educational" and informative. It goes into Federal Stafford Loans, Parent Federal PLUS Loans, Graduate Federal PLUS Loans, and CitiAssist Loans for students. You can learn about financial aid options like scholarships, grants and school sponsored funding. Many students take out private loans as well as federal loans to pay for college and then realize it might be better to consolidate all their loans into 1 easy monthly payment which Citibank can help with. You can apply right on their website for undergraduate loans, graduate loans, loan consolidation, and loans for parents. The Student Loan Advisor tool is an excellent instrument where you can put in the school of choice and the state along with your year in college. The website will spit out results based on Federal Loan Products available and Alternative Loan Products that Citi offers.

out of the inbox citibank offers to help users restart their online banking

My Citibank checking account dates back to when iPods were novel and 1GB was enough to satisfy your iTunes cravings (see Jan. 2005 post). For several years, Citibank gave iPods away to anyone who'd open up a checking account online and do a few bill payments.

I haven't accessed my Citi checking account in at least a year, because last time I tried, I locked myself out with too many password attempts (note 1). And I've been too lazy to go through the often tedious reset process (see below).

So I was pleased to receive an email this morning offering to help me get restarted (see screenshot below). I figured the bank had noted my previously futile attempts to login and was sending along a bit of digital assistance. Sure, it was a year or two after the fact, but I believe in better late than never.

But the main call to action in the activation email is:
Enter the User ID and Password you created when you opened your account online.

So evidently, the bank thinks I'm smarter than I really am and actually can remember the username/password from my two-years dormant account.

Had I not been blogging about the email, I would have deleted it. But as I re-read it more closely, I did see the small light-gray link in the corner for resetting my password. Unfortunately, Citi requires your ATM card and PIN to reset passwords (see second screenshot). This is precisely why I wasn't able to reset the thing when I was locked out two years ago.

My take:
1. An activation to stalled online banking customers is a great idea. But in this case, Citibank did not deliver on its promise to "help" me restart online banking (note 2). As a matter of fact, I am now even more frustrated. If you are going to send a message offering help, make sure there is actual help available for the various ways customers will respond.
2. For infrequent users, consider simpler password-reset procedures based on email address or mobile phone number on file plus Social Security Number and/or shared secrets.
3. Finally, don't offer a dead-end password reset page. In Citibank's case, if the user doesn't have both their ATM card number and PIN, there is no place to turn. There's not even a phone number listed on the page to seek live help (you have to use Contact Us in the upper right).

Note:
1. I have two Citi accounts with different usernames and passwords, so it always makes for an interesting memory test at login.
2. I should add that I have enough money in the non-interest account to provide Citi with a bit of profit every year.

citibank doesnt want your business linux users

For some reason, Citibank won't let customers using Linux computers log in to their online accounts. Adam argues that in 2009 this doesn't make sense, especially when no other major corporate website blocks him like this.
I'm writing about a longstanding issue I've had with Citibank. Given that it's now 2009 and web account management has transitioned from a fringe benefit to "the way business is done," I frequently struggle with Citibank because they seem to have decided to not support Linux and Firefox as clients for their online credit card account management sites. A quick Google search of "citibank Linux" will pull back loads of hits of people complaining about this issue and all sorts of inventive workarounds. I don't want to mess around with inventive workarounds, I want to be able to access my accounts online from my PC like I do for my cell phone provider, three other banks, my 401k manager, my school and scores of other places where online paperwork takes place as part of the business of real life. I'm even able to do online business with the State of New York, the State of Calfifornia, the IRS and even some obscure federal agencies. It is 2009, if we don't get jetpacks, I at least expect my bank to have a website that supports all the major platforms.

I haven't tried to contact them, because I know for sure I'm just going to get some script about "we've made this decision because of *bs reason here*" and I really don't want to deal with the headache of changing credit cards. All I (and the thousands of others out there who have Linux desktops) want is to be able to access our accounts the same way we are able to access accounts for every other major vendor. The only way this is going to happen is if they get bad press that may shy future business away, specifically, people should know up front that they are not going to provide the same level of service (ie: support for the three major client platforms on the Internet) as their peers before their customers begin the application process.

Incidentally: I can successfully apply for and receive a credit card through Citibank using Firefox and Linux, but after they've got my business, I can't login to manage my account. What's up with that?

Anyway, some people would say that this is kind of a fringe complaint and that Linux doesn't have a lot of market share. I don't really care if it does or it doesn't, apparently the rest of the world has chosen to support Linux (Citibank account management is pretty much the only website I've had problems accessing under Linux in YEARS) and if they're not going to follow industry best practices and instead provide inferior service, they need to be upfront about it. Alternatively, and ideally, they get with the program.

I'm curious, are there other Linux users out there who are frustrated with a company for not providing an online service that works on Linux?

citibank slips ads into online credit card statements

According to a recent article from ClickZ's Kate Kaye, targeted ads have been showing up on Citibank customers' online credit card statements.

by Helen Leggatt

Businesses have to be increasingly innovative in the current tough economic climate, and some are finding new vehicles to get ads to consumers. The latest place for an ad to pop up is alongside entries on credit card statements, reports ClickZ.

According to Citi Cards EVP Liza Landsman, the offers being displayed are "primarily merchant discounts and promotions and supplemental financial services offerings". The examples offered by ClickZ demonstrate that ads are clearly targeted to the consumer's card activity. For instance, a consumer who made a purchase at a Sirius Satellite Radio was presented with a Sony product delivery offer, while another was shown a discount offer for Best Bath Store alongside a debit to a New York spa.

Some in the marketing industry believe the tactic is the result of innovation borne of the need to create maximum value and relevance. Others believe it is irresponsible to encourage impulse spending.

"While we understand the relevance of targeting consumers who are very likely purchasers, we feel that in this current economy it's poor taste to encourage impulse spending while someone is checking their credit card statement or paying down their account," said Justin Gomolka, CEO of Best Bath Store.
